Town progressed to the second round of the Carling Cup for the first time since 2004 via a comfortable 4-1 victory over Leyton Orient at Portman Road. Danny Haynes netted twice along with Tommy Miller and Alan Lee with Adam Boyd scoring for the visitors.

Town's 2008/09 season got off to the worst possible start as Preston came from behind to beat the Blues 2-1. Kevin Lisbie put Town ahead in the second minute but goals from Paul McKenna and Simon Whaley won the points for the visitors.
